JOHN PRESTWICH MBE  24.11.1938 – 27.2.2006

John in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot, June 2003.

The following is a message from Maggie.

It is with great sorrow that I add this introduction to our website. Sadly, John’s life came to an end on February 27th 2006. At the time he was in St. Thomas’ Hospital, London and undergoing surgery but complications arose and he didn’t survive.

As his life story has been so inspirational to so many people worldwide, I am retaining this website in the certainty that his life will continue to be an inspiration for many years to come.

Over the years, John was personally responsible for raising many thousands of pounds for several charities. However, in later years he often told me that it was his dearest wish to support the Lane-Fox Respiratory Unit at St. Thomas’ Hospital. If therefore there are any readers of his website who, in memory of one of the most remarkable men who has ever lived, would like to make a contribution, donations can be sent to:-

John & MaggieGuy’s and St. Thomas’ Charity
Counting House
Guy’s Hospital
St. Thomas’ Street

Cheques or money orders should be made payable to:-
Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Charity ‘L-FRUPA’

Several years ago John made a request to Maggie that when he died he would like the following poem to be quoted. She therefore included it in the Order of Service at his Thanksgiving Service.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

Thank you all so much, Maggie Prestwich
